What to Do If a Tooth Is Knocked Out
A knocked-out permanent tooth requires immediate action to save it:
- Pick up the tooth by the crown — do NOT touch the root.
- Gently rinse it with water if dirty—do not scrub or remove tissues.
- Try to place it back into the socket if possible.
- If you can’t reinsert it, keep the tooth moist by placing it:
- In milk
- In your own saliva
- Or in a clean container with water
- In milk
Time is critical—visit our office or your nearest emergency dentist immediately. The sooner you receive care, the higher the chance of saving the tooth.
For baby teeth, do not place the tooth back in the socket. Contact your child’s dentist for guidance.

- Apply an ice pack to the outside of your face
